Booklists

Welcome

In college, my English professors would often ask us: What makes a book a Great Book? Is a book great simply because it is old, or because it appears on every list of the classics? Or does its greatness lie within its pages—in the truth it contains and in the quality of its storytelling, prose, and characters?

When I became a mother, I found myself asking similar questions about children’s books: What makes a good children’s book? Which books will best form my child’s heart and mind? Which books will cultivate curiosity and wonder in my child? Which books will help my child treasure reading for a lifetime?

The booklists on Beloved Bookshelf are the fruit of many hours spent pondering these questions as I search for excellent children’s books. The lists are far from complete, but my hope is that they can begin to bridge the gap for other parents and educators searching for quality literature.
