In college, my English professors would often ask us: What makes a book a Great Book? Is a book great because it is old or because it can be found on every list of classics? Or is a book great because of what lies within its pages—the truth it contains and the quality of its storytelling, prose, and characters?

When I became a mother, I found myself asking similar questions about children’s books: What makes a good children’s book? Which books will best form my child’s heart and mind? Which books will cultivate curiosity and wonder in my child? Which books will help my child treasure reading for a lifetime?

The booklists on Beloved Bookshelf are the fruit of many hours spent pondering these questions as I search for excellent children’s books. The lists are far from complete, but my hope is that they can begin to bridge the gap for other parents and educators searching for quality literature.

Lauren Williams is a Virginia-based wife, mother, and home educator. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Hillsdale College. Alongside homeschooling her children, she serves as the web and design manager for a private classical academy.
