Welcome

In college my English professors would ask the question: What makes a book a ‘Great Book’? Is it because it is old or found on every Classics booklist? Or does it have to do with what lies within its pages: the truth it contains and the quality of its story-telling, prose, and characters?

When I became a mother, I began asking myself similar questions: What makes a good children’s book? Which books will best form my child’s heart and mind? Which books will cultivate my child’s curiosity and wonder? Which books will help my child treasure reading for a lifetime?

The booklists on Beloved Bookshelf are the fruit of many hours pondering these questions as I search for excellent children’s books. The lists are far from complete, but my hope is that they can begin to bridge the gap for other parents and educators searching for quality literature.
